Nearly a Decade in Aquatics, 19 Years with Massanutten Resort

With nine years at Massanutten WaterPark and nearly two decades at the resort itself, my career in aquatics has been a journey of growth and learning. Transitioning into this role was a new challenge, but it quickly became a fulfilling experience in a field I’ve come to enjoy.

From Marine to Aquatics Manager: A Unique Background

Before aquatics, I served as a Marine in the K-9 field for nine years, followed by 20 years in customer service. I came into the aquatics industry with minimal technical knowledge, but with an eagerness to learn. Fortunately, I had a fantastic team, including Dana Staniunas and Bill Frazier, who helped me develop the skills needed to succeed in the field. Their guidance has been instrumental in my journey, and I continue to build on what they taught me every day.

A Humble Path, Recognized Through Dedication

Though I haven’t received any formal awards within the industry, I take pride in the work I do every day. My focus has always been on learning and contributing to my team rather than on recognition. Watching my team’s progress and seeing our guests have positive experiences is the most meaningful reward.

Embracing Aquatics: Motivation and Growth

My journey to aquatics came after several roles around the resort, all customer service-based. I was motivated to take on the challenge of managing a new field, and the chance to work with and mentor a younger team was a big draw for me. After joining as Building Manager, I maintained an open mind and a willingness to learn, leading to my promotion to Operations Manager seven years ago. This role has allowed me to grow alongside my team, learning new skills each day.

Lessons from My Grandfather: Inspiration Through Hard Work

The most significant influence in my life has been my grandfather. His dedication and work ethic left a lasting impact on me, especially his belief that “if you don’t learn something every day, you’ve wasted that day.” His wisdom has motivated me to continuously improve and to instill that same drive in my team.

A Memorable Moment: Pride in My Team

One story I always share happened during my first emergency response on the floor. A guest had fainted, and I watched in awe as our young lifeguards sprang into action, each knowing their role and working seamlessly alongside our OEC. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming pride in my team’s skill and professionalism, proving that even the youngest lifeguards can perform like seasoned pros when it matters most.

Life Outside of Work: Lawn Care and Golf

When I’m not at the waterpark, you’ll likely find me on the golf course or caring for my lawn, which has become a bit of an obsession. I take pride in keeping it in top shape, and it’s a relaxing escape from my day-to-day responsibilities.

Advice for Aquatics Newcomers

My advice to anyone entering the aquatics field is to bring an open mind and a readiness to learn. Mistakes are part of the journey—trust the process, learn from any setbacks, and don’t be afraid to dive in. You’ll find that everything can be fixed, and each experience will only make you better in the field.

11 Seasons in Aquatics, 24 Years In Amusement Industry

Anthony Sabo has been an integral part of the amusement industry for over two decades, with the last 11 seasons focused on aquatics. His journey to becoming Vice President of Zoombezi Bay and overseeing guest services for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a story of dedication, growth, and a genuine passion for people.

From Kennywood Park to Zoombezi Bay: Building a Career

Anthony’s career in the amusement industry started in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, at the renowned Kennywood Park. Spending most of his early years in the Maintenance department, he gained hands-on experience caring for various rides and attractions. This foundational knowledge in maintenance and operations proved to be a strong asset in his later roles.

In 2012, Anthony made the move to Columbus, OH, where he took on the role of Rides Maintenance Manager at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Zoombezi Bay. It was here that he truly immersed himself in the world of aquatics, gaining in-depth expertise in the maintenance and operation of pools and waterslides. His years of experience culminated in 2019 when he returned to Ohio as Vice President of Zoombezi Bay, overseeing both the waterpark and guest services at the Columbus Zoo.

Anthony’s professional experience spans beyond waterparks. In 2017, he joined Universal Orlando Resort, where he held various leadership positions in Attractions Operations. Working in a park that welcomes 10 million guests a year gave him an unparalleled view of large-scale park operations, further enriching his understanding of guest experience and safety.

Recognition and Leadership in the Industry

Although Anthony hasn’t received formal awards for his work, his expertise has earned him a place on the Advisory Board for Amusement Ride Safety for Ohio’s Department of Agriculture. His leadership and dedication to safety have positioned him as a key figure in ensuring the highest standards of safety in the industry.

A Chance Encounter with Aquatics

Anthony’s entry into the aquatics industry wasn’t exactly planned. Growing up near Kennywood Park, he knew from the age of 10 that he wanted to work in amusement parks. However, his transition into aquatics came later, and almost by accident. While seeking a management role in the amusement industry, he stumbled upon a Rides Maintenance Manager position at Zoombezi Bay. Initially hesitant due to its waterpark focus, Anthony only applied after hearing the zoo was still searching for the right candidate. Looking back, he considers it one of the best career decisions he ever made.

“I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Anthony says, reflecting on his unexpected but rewarding journey into aquatics.

Inspiration and Mentorship: A Nod to John Gannon

Throughout his career, Anthony has drawn inspiration from many industry veterans, but one person stands out: John Gannon. As the last General Manager of the old Wyandot Lake amusement park and the first General Manager of Zoombezi Bay, John had more than 30 years of experience in the amusement industry. His wealth of knowledge and leadership left a lasting impact on Anthony and helped shape his approach to park management.

A Forklift Lesson to Remember

When asked about a memorable moment from his career, Anthony recalls a humorous yet valuable learning experience. While moving a water ride vehicle that weighed around 8,000 lbs., he failed to account for rainwater that had filled the vehicle overnight. As a result, he and the vehicle tipped forward with the forklift, slowly teetering until it was at a 45-degree angle.

Thankfully, there were no injuries or damage, but the incident left an indelible mark on Anthony. “I’ll never forget that lesson,” he says with a smile.

Beyond the Waterpark: Hobbies and Passions

Outside of his professional life, Anthony is an avid traveler, particularly enjoying visits to other amusement parks and waterparks. While he’s always on the lookout for new ideas, he genuinely enjoys the experience of visiting these places as a guest. Additionally, his passion for history often leads him to explore historical sites, from battlefields to national monuments, combining his love for learning with travel.

Advice for Aspiring Aquatics Professionals

For anyone considering a career in the aquatics industry, Anthony’s advice is clear: “Do it! But understand why you want to do it.” He emphasizes the importance of passion for people, as the job is both rewarding and challenging. Whether focusing on guest service or team member satisfaction, Anthony believes that every decision should be centered around the well-being and enjoyment of others.

“Everything we do revolves around people,” Anthony explains. “Take care of the people first, and the financial benefits will follow.”

His advice reflects the core of his leadership philosophy—caring for guests and staff alike to create a safe, enjoyable, and thriving environment.

Making Waves: 22 Years in the Aquatics Industry

My entry into the aquatics industry was unexpected—I have been in the aquatics industry for 22 years, transitioning from part-time summer work to a full-time management role. My journey has been both rewarding and unexpected, allowing me to grow within a field I’ve come to love.

From Classroom to Poolside: Building My Career

Before diving into aquatics, I was an elementary school teacher for 8 years. My experience working with children has been invaluable, as my current employees are often just a bit older than the students I once taught. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to see these young people grow and succeed, knowing I’ve played a part in their development.

Recognizing Excellence: Honors and Awards

I’m proud to have been the first recipient of the IASS Vera Solis Leadership Award in 2022. Additionally, I’ve been honored with the Best Presentation Award at Ellis & Associates’ International Aquatic Safety School. Our Wild Island team has twice earned the Ellis & Associates Platinum International Safety Award, and The Coconut Bowl at Wild Island was named the Top Family Entertainment Center of the World by IAAPA in 2022.

Beyond the Pool: Life Beyond the Aquatics Industry

Outside of work, I love staying active through skiing, soccer, and racing. Skiing offers a refreshing escape in the winter, while soccer keeps me sharp and engaged. Racing, however, is my biggest passion—there’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of being on a dirt track. These activities not only keep me physically fit but also fuel my determination and focus, which I bring back to my professional life.

Laughter and Memories: Highlights from My Career

Working in the aquatics industry has given me countless memorable experiences. The camaraderie among colleagues is something I deeply value—I’ve met some of the most creative and fun people here. From ensuring safety to sharing laughter, each day brings new stories and memories. The friendships formed in this tight-knit community are built on shared challenges and successes, making my time in this industry incredibly rewarding.

Words of Wisdom: Advice for Aspiring Aquatics Professionals

For those entering the aquatics industry, my advice is to surround yourself with great people. A supportive and inspiring team can make all the difference in your career. Seek mentors, be open to learning from everyone, and build a strong reputation through dedication and hard work. The aquatics industry is small and close-knit, and your commitment will lead to success and fulfillment.

Making a Splash: 17 Years in the Aquatics Industry

I have been in the aquatics industry for 17 years, evolving from entry-level roles to management positions. This journey has been filled with new challenges and learning opportunities, reinforcing my passion and commitment to the field.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Purdue University which has contributed to my business knowledge. On the practical experience side, I have worked at 5 different waterparks, as well as in an operational consulting position with StarGuard ELITE and Innovative Attraction Management.

Diving Deep: My Path to Aquatic Success

I originally wanted to pursue a career in designing and building roller coasters, but after my second year as a lifeguard, I decided I truly loved this field and wanted to stay. I changed my major, and worked with my mentors to chart my own path of success.

Beyond the Pool: Passions and Pastimes

My Wife and I are avid Disney fans and love to travel to new parks whenever we can. This shared passion allows us to explore and draw inspiration from the creativity we encounter, enriching both our personal and professional lives.

Spotlight on Achievements: Sharing Knowledge and Experience

While I haven’t received specific awards, I actively present at conferences and tradeshows. These events allow me to share my expertise, stay updated on trends, and connect with industry professionals, expanding my knowledge and fostering collaboration.

Splashes of Humor: Memorable Moments in Aquatics

I have too many memories to choose from, but they all stem back to 1 major message….. stay humble and be ready to do whatever it takes. Throughout my time in the industry there have been so many times I have helped do things that some would say “are not my job” or “you have other people to do that”, but I find it best to want to help wherever it is needed. Whether I am doing the round of chem tests for my CPO, cleaning poop from a pool, making pretzels in the kitchen (don’t worry, not right after the poop in the pool!) to overall jumping in wherever it is needed, I have grown only from being welling to help.

Diving In: Advice for Aquatic Aspirants

Find great mentors and chart your own path for success. Be willing to take risks, try new things, and make mistakes. You only know what you know, and everyday strive to learn at least one new thing. The aquatics industry is very small and close knit, and if you are a dedicated person, word will travel, and you will succeed.

Making a Splash: 29 Years in the Aquatics Industry

I have been in Aquatics since 1995, totaling 29 years. I started in Aquatics working for Adventure World in Largo, MD, as a Lifeguard and over time became a Full-time Manager. I worked at Adventure World, which eventually rebranded to Six Flags America, and then moved to Six Flags New England. During my time at Six Flags New England, I was able to experience more than just the Operational side of Aquatics and started learning more about overall waterpark operation, maintenance, theme park rides, and admissions. After about 12 years at Six Flags, I began working for Great Wolf Lodge in the Pocono Mountains in PA, where I further expanded my knowledge on safety, pump room operations, fiberglass, and air quality, as well as the highlights and challenges of year-round operations.

My next adventure was with Northgate Resorts as their Corporate Director of Aquatics and Aquatics Development. This was a great team to work with, building standards and collaborating with several builders and suppliers on new aquatics developments throughout their ever-growing portfolio. However, I missed park operations and the daily team interactions, so I returned to theme parks, joining the Cedar Fair family at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom as the Director of Operations, Safety, and Security in Allentown, PA.

Diving Deep: My Path to Aquatic Success

Over the years, I have earned several certifications including CPO, AFO, EMT-B, OSHA 10, and I am an Instructor Trainer for Ellis and Associates. Many people ask how my career path led me to the aquatic industry, and like many in this industry, I never planned for it to be my career. I stumbled upon it, loved it, and it became my career. My oldest brother, who was working as a Security Supervisor at a theme park, introduced me to the industry. He convinced me to work in Aquatics, and I fell in love with the team-centered environment, the sun-filled summers, and the amazing friendships and connections I made.

I graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in political science and business administration while working in the industry throughout school. Recently, I started working towards my RN degree. A significant contribution to my success is my constant desire to learn and understand why. This curiosity leads me to ask questions and seek exposure to different aspects of Aquatics beyond Operations. My philosophy is to learn something from everyone I work with and add that knowledge to my personal “toolbox.”

Many people throughout my career have helped shape who I am today, including Darlene Reese Sittig, Franceen Gonzalez, Greg Waldron, Cody Butcher, and Chris Ardizoni.

Beyond the Pool: Hobbies and Passions

I love traveling and seeing the world, painting/drawing, and I also enjoy teaching and training. Whenever my schedule permits, I enjoy teaching a class or mentoring someone interested in this industry.

A Wave of Memories: Funniest Moments on the Job

The people I have worked with always seem to have funnier stories about me than I could tell about myself. Early in my career, I had a group of friends that I worked with for many years, and we always got into some type of nonsense. One season, we had a friendly battle with the Entertainment Department, and we would go back and forth with pranks. One day, we decided to steal their costumes from the Western stunt show and nail them to the back wall of our wave pool. Our manager came to us asking if we knew anything about their missing costumes (we obviously said, of course not). She found them on the back wall and proceeded to try to take them down, pulling on them and using her foot on the wall.

Splashing into Aquatics: Advice for Newcomers

Follow your passion. If you love the aquatics industry, stay with it despite any skepticism. To excel, you need to work hard, get hands-on experience, and learn from those around you. Dedication and continuous learning are key to success in this field.

CEO at life Floor
My Aquatics Journey, Professional Background, and Success Factors:

I’ve been deeply involved in the aquatics industry for 13 years now, ever since I founded Life Floor in 2011. It’s been an incredible journey filled with learning and growth.

My background is diverse, largely shaped by hands-on experience in the aquatics industry. With over 150 water park visits and participation in 200+ municipal parks or community centers across the US and Caribbean, I’ve gained extensive insights.

Before founding Life Floor, I worked with insurance companies at McKinsey & Company, understanding risk assessment and loss management. This experience inspired me to prioritize safety in aquatic recreation. Seeing the positive impact of safety measures on insurance premiums in previous installations motivated me to establish Life Floor, aiming to enhance safety standards in the industry.

Career Path and Motivation:

Growing up, aquatic recreation was a significant part of my life, with frequent visits to water parks and community centers. My childhood memories of fun and family bonding in these environments fueled my passion for the industry. Transitioning from a lucrative consulting job to founding Life Floor wasn’t about financial gain but about making a difference.

A pivotal moment came when I pitched the idea to an investor who questioned my decision. I stood firm, emphasizing the importance of safety in aquatic environments and the potential to save lives. This encounter solidified my commitment to creating safer spaces in aquatic recreation, driving the early days of Life Floor with a passion to prevent accidents and ensure everyone’s enjoyment and safety in aquatic settings.

Notable Recognition and Awards:

Life Floor has been honored with several awards, recognizing our dedication to safety within the aquatics industry, including 9 World Waterpark Association Leading Edge Awards. One memorable recognition is our nomination for the 2024 Meaningful Capitalism Awards, which highlights companies that prioritize both profit and social impact.

Source of Inspiration:

Tim Welsh, a former partner at McKinsey and current vice chairman at US Bank, stands out as a consistent mentor and inspiration in my career. His embodiment of servant leadership, always prioritizing his team’s success over personal recognition, has been instrumental in shaping my approach to leadership. Tim’s encouragement during challenging times reminds me to celebrate small victories and stay focused on the long-term goal of industry transformation.

Additionally, figures like Josh Martin from Martin Aquatic, Trevor Leonard formerly of Six Flags, Monty Jasper from Cedar Fair, and Chris Sumner from Universal, among others, have inspired me within the aquatics industry. Franceen Gonzales from Whitewater, particularly her contributions to standards development, and Rich Martin, who played a key role in the NSF standard process, have also been influential in my journey.

Memorable Industry Moment:

One memorable industry moment stands out from early 2013 when we secured a meeting with Carnival Cruise Line to discuss a potential trial of our product. After investing considerable time and resources into obtaining IMO certification, required for the trial, we were ready to move forward. However, upon reaching Carnival’s headquarters for the scheduled meeting, we discovered that the person we were supposed to meet had left the company unexpectedly.

Despite the setback, we persevered, engaging with other team members, but ultimately, it seemed like a dead end. Fast forward two and a half years later, at WWA 2015, I encountered a representative from Carnival who expressed interest in our product. Skeptical due to our past experience, I shared the story of our failed meeting. Surprisingly, he was apologetic and committed to making things right. This renewed collaboration led to a successful trial of our product on a cruise ship, ultimately becoming one of our most significant partnerships.

Beyond Aquatics: Hobbies and Activities:

Outside of my work in Aquatics, I have a range of hobbies and activities that keep me busy. Running is a big part of my life, and I’ve completed nine marathons so far. I’m working towards beating my personal best by age 40, a goal I set back in college. Camping and backpacking are other passions of mine, and this summer, I’m joining my dad to climb the highest peaks in Maine and New Hampshire, which will also mark my first trip to Maine.

I’m an avid Magic the Gathering player, participating in tournaments and enjoying the game with my kids. Additionally, I’m involved in church activities, having helped plant a church and previously serving as the board president. Coaching my kids in basketball, flag football, and soon cross country keeps me active and engaged outside of work.

Advice for Incoming Aquatics Industry Professionals:

For those entering the Aquatics industry, it’s important to understand that fame and wealth aren’t typically the driving forces behind choosing this career path. Instead, it’s about making a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day. Whether it’s helping families create lasting memories or teaching children valuable skills, our work contributes to positive experiences in aquatic recreation.

First and foremost, identify your purpose. What drives you? What impact do you want to have on others? For me, it’s about ensuring that everyone I encounter feels valued and knows they belong. Building relationships within the Aquatics community is crucial. It’s like being part of a big family where support and collaboration are key.

When starting out, seek out companies that genuinely embody their values. Look for organizations where values aren’t just words on a wall but are lived out every day. Partnering with companies that align with your values can lead to meaningful change within the industry and beyond.

Focus less on money, fame, or conventional success, and more on how you’re making a difference. By prioritizing service and impact, everything else will fall into place. Remember, success isn’t measured solely by financial gain but by the positive influence you have on others and the industry as a whole.

Taryn Eisenman - Bolduc

Managing Owner at High Road Management Training
Years in the Aquatics Industry:

With over 25 years of experience in water parks, theme parks, and hospitality—spanning indoor and outdoor venues across public, corporate, and private sectors—I have encountered a diverse array of challenges and successes. Holding certifications as a Certified Pool Operator (CPO), Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), and Ellis Instructor Trainer (IT), alongside a Bachelor’s degree in Business with a concentration in Marketing and a Master’s degree in Management, my education aligns with my practical expertise.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of learning from exceptional mentors and collaborating with talented colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous growth and knowledge exchange. I have always found the most rewarding experience to be training young managers and helping them to be successful and grow within the industry.

My passion for training and developing managers led me to launch High Road Management Training alongside my business partner. This venture is aimed at empowering emerging leaders with the skills and guidance they need to thrive in their careers. We focus not only on teaching the technical skills that most managers require but also on refining the soft skills they bring to the table.

By prioritizing mentorship and skill development, I am committed to fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in the industry.

Career Path to the Aquatic Industry:

My journey into the aquatic industry started in 1999 when Six Flags Great Adventure (NJ) began building Hurricane Harbor. I began as a ride attendant and joined the first lifeguard class. Initially, it was just a summer job to meet people in my new town and help with college expenses. Even after graduating from college and again after graduate school, I found myself drawn back to the aquatic field because the people and experiences were unlike anything else. I always say it’s a job where colleagues become like family, and you can stay for a season or a lifetime.

Throughout my career I have been invited to new properties that were opening or reorganizing under new ownership. I loved working with clean slates to build teams and systems that would allow them to function efficiently even from the start. It was during these experiences that I developed a deep appreciation for the training and development side of the business.

Most Significant Source of Inspiration:

My family has been my biggest support system and inspiration. Additionally, individuals like Franceen Gonzales, Jayson Maxwell, and Kristie Moses have influenced my career significantly. As a female in the industry, I admire figures like Franceen, Denise Beckson, and Lori Gogel for their kindness, knowledge, and influence. It’s great to have a list of mentors who I can reach out to when I encounter a new situation. It is my pleasure to offer this same reliability to people and the properties I’ve worked with. My team at each location has also been a major source of inspiration.s

Memorable Moments:

Over the years, some of the most memorable moments for me have involved the incredible employees I’ve had the pleasure of working with—learning their stories and witnessing their growth.

At one of my properties, they took decorating my office to a whole new level. What began with a simple card, cup of coffee, and gift card for occasions soon escalated to finding my office covered with white fluff, glitter, and 150 poinsettias during Christmas time.

One year, my management team and I decided to repaint the breakroom in vibrant green and stencil motivational quotes across the walls. The following year, the staff felt my office didn’t quite reflect my management style, so they asked for permission to take over the decoration duties. I was blindfolded and kept out of the office for two days. When the blindfold came off, I was greeted with neon quotes adorning the walls and all my plaques and frames meticulously hung. It was an incredible surprise.

But beyond these amusing anecdotes, what truly sticks with me are the countless memories of individuals who have worked for/with me throughout my career. From former pro baseball players to contestants from “So You Think You Can Dance,” up-and-coming rappers, and lifeguards who have since become seasoned veterans in our field, witnessing their growth and success has been the highlight of my journey. I’m always thrilled when they reach out to catch up or seek guidance, or even share their latest music. The connections and experiences I’ve had in this industry are truly priceless, and I could go on and on recounting them.

Guidance for New Aquatics Professionals

Embrace every opportunity that comes your way. Say yes to every task, regardless of how small or tedious it may seem, as each one is a chance to learn and grow. Keep an open mind and be willing to learn from the ground up.

As you progress, make sure to understand every aspect of the business. Don’t avoid tasks you don’t initially enjoy—these are often where the most growth happens. Learn how to schedule effectively, manage inventory, and implement systems that empower your team.

Ultimately, the sign of a successful team is when you can confidently take time off knowing your staff is well-trained and capable of managing things in your absence. With the right attitude, the opportunities in this industry are limitless.

Beyond the Waters

Apart from my work in the aquatics industry, my free time is primarily devoted to enjoying precious moments with my two young girls, both under the age of two. This means lots of singing, dancing, story time, playdates, and visits to kids’ museums, along with the occasional date night with my husband. We enjoy being outdoors, attending comedy shows and sporting events, and indulging in binge-watching our favorite shows.

Starting my aquatics career lifeguarding at a summer camp in 2005, I then moved to the bustling environment of Coney Island – Sunlite Pool in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2007. My career path has taken me to Gulfport, Mississippi, working at Gulf Islands Waterpark, and eventually leading me back to Coney Island as an operations manager. Currently while based in Houston Texas, I oversee aquatic operations across 14 properties all over the USA, embodying the role of a mentor to the next generation of aquatic professionals.

Career Path And Inspirational Leaders

My family has always had lifeguarding in their blood with my parents and siblings lifeguarding at points in their lives, I felt my first job should follow suit. I took my first lifeguarding job in 2005, working two years at a summer camp guarding lake front swimming and boating areas.

In 2007, I got my first taste of waterpark operations when I was hired at Coney Island – Sunlite Pool in Cincinnati Ohio, and I absolutely fell in love with it all. The culture of working as a team and the smiles on the guests faces really had me hooked. While attending college I kept my summers busy staying in the industry moving up the ranks to being a Lifeguard supervisor and eventually Pool Manager. At Coney Island I was able to learn from some of the industries best such as Mike Howard, Krista Howard and Rob Morrison.

After wanting to pursue a career in the industry, Mike was able to connect me with Mark Moore at Gulf islands Waterpark. I leaped at the opportunity, packed my bags and moved to Gulfport Mississippi where I could put my skills to the test. Working for Mark was such a blessing, he was there to guide me hands on in the practical skills of being a leader. He allowed me to fail, and fail I did, allowing me to learn from my mistakes and grow as a person.

I then accepted a position as an operations manager back at Coney Island where I could lead and develop the aquatics team. Today I serve as the Director of Aquatics for Great Escapes RV Resorts, based out of Houston Texas, this position takes me all over the country. Additionally I have held positions on many industries committees such as the Safety Committee with the World Waterpark Association. Currently I sit on the Resort Committee for the WWA and Waterpark Committee for IAAPA.

Memorable Moments

Working in waterparks brings its share of unique stories, but one particularly memorable moment was after hours, opening up an aquatic facility for a few celebrities to enjoy the attractions in a “normal” environment. Convincing the lifeguards to treat them like any other guest while maintaining professionalism was challenging but fun. The event ended on a high note, with the celebrities inviting lifeguards for photos and engaging in open conversations, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Splash of advice for incoming aquatics professionals

Embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, not fearing failure but seeing it as a stepping stone. Network, seek mentorship, value teamwork, and always aim to contribute positively to guest experiences and safety. My journey, marked by learning from mistakes and being inspired by family and mentors, underscores the importance of perseverance and passion in building a rewarding career in the aquatics industry.

Beyond the Waters

Beyond my professional life, I’m deeply passionate about the outdoors, finding joy in scuba diving, hiking, swimming, and playing pickleball. Being outdoors whenever possible not only offers me a break from the demands of work but also keeps me connected to the natural elements that I so dearly appreciate in my career.

Embarking on a Lifelong Voyage

For over 46 years, I’ve navigated the waters of the aquatic industry, dedicating 36 of those years to ensuring the water quality at Wet ‘n Wild Orlando was nothing short of excellent. My journey didn’t stop there; I ventured further into the industry with a six-year stint at Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay, always ensuring the water was pristine and safe for all.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Expert

My career started right after high school when I joined Tropicana Pools. That job wasn’t just work; it was where I found my calling. It taught me the ropes of pool building and maintenance, setting the stage for my later role at Wet ‘n Wild Water Park. Joining Wet ‘n Wild in 1980 as a Water Chemist was a pivotal moment for me, marking the start of an incredible journey in waterpark management.

Sharing Knowledge as a CPO Instructor

I’ve always believed in passing on what I’ve learned, which led me to become a Certified Pool Operator instructor. Teaching others and contributing to the growth of the aquatic community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

A Career Adorned with Accolades

Along this journey, I’ve been honored with the WWA Executive Board Award and was inducted into the WWA Hall of Fame in 2022. These moments stand out as highlights in my career, symbolizing the passion and dedication I’ve poured into the aquatic industry.

Memorable Moments

In 1981 I met the woman of my dreams at Wet ‘n Wild. She worked in our Ice Cream building. I was eating breakfast one morning and was reading the paper and she sat down to ask me what I was reading, and I said the movie list. She said that she would like to see the new Muppets movie; (this was my que) being a fisherman I took the bait, and we have been together ever since.

Guidance for the Next Wave

For those looking to dive into the aquatic industry, I’d say: remain humble, always be ready to lend a hand, and seize every chance you get. This industry is not just about managing water; it’s about creating experiences and ensuring safety for everyone who takes the plunge.

Beyond the Waters

While my professional life has been deeply rooted in aquatics, my personal interests take me to the ocean’s vastness and beyond. I cherish offshore fishing, scuba diving, and exploring the Caribbean. My love for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, seafood festivals, and live music adds another layer to my life, reminding me of the world’s beauty beyond the waterpark gates.

In reflecting on my career, I see a journey marked by continuous learning, sharing, and a deep love for the aquatic industry. It’s been a voyage of discovery, challenges, and immense satisfaction.
